Why every musician should learn to jam

Last update on July 28, 2013.

Even the greatest song gets boring if you listen to it on repeat.  As you become familiar with all the details some of the magic disappears.  The same is true for practicing a musical instrument.

Many people primarily play sheet music or play along with their favorite songs.  Eventually this gets boring, like listening to the same song on repeat for too long.  There is no spontaneity and it is at this stage where people lose interest in playing an instrument.

There is a solution to getting stuck playing the same music over and over - it's called improvisation.  Learning ...

5 best free VST plugins to spice up your sound

Last update on Jan. 11, 2016.

What is a VST plugin?

VST plugins are audio effects or software instruments that can be used when jamming with other musicians over the internet using jammr.  They are like little apps that change your sound!

They are especially useful if you want to enhance the sound of an accoustic instrument or vocals, for example, by adding a reverb to give the feel of a concert hall.  What's best is that many companies sell high-quality VST plugins and there is a rich choice of free ones too.

In this post I will share some of the best free VST ...

Overcoming fear of wrong notes when jamming

Last update on July 6, 2013.

Learning to play songs does not prepare you for improvisation.  Although you know how to play chord progressions, beats, or solos, you haven't learned how to find notes that fit onto new music.  The result is that you may feel paralyzed by fear of wrong notes.

In this blog post I will explain how to overcome fear of wrong notes.  This will help you jam more fluently and unlock the skill of playing on the spot.

Disable "Send" when experimenting

Before you've got your bearings in a jam it may be necessary to experiment.  This will allow you ...

Stefan's Gear

Last update on June 30, 2013.

I have been playing guitar on and off since 1997.  Nothing has made me as passionate about music as jamming together online on jammr.net.  I've gone through phases of learning the basics of playing guitar, playing to songs from my favorite bands, and now jamming over the internet - but my basic setup has stayed the same.

My setup is a Fender Stratocaster, Line6 POD HD, and an Alto Truesonic powered speaker.

Guitar tones I use

The Truesonic speaker is a powered speaker that is designed to accurately reproduce sound.  Instead of using a guitar amplifier to get a ...

The 7 best tips to successful online (instrumental) jamming

Last update on June 26, 2013.

A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam")
by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements.

Wikipedia

Jamming is great; it breaks the boundaries of set music and allows you to be creative with other musicians. But not everybody has joined a jam session before. So here are a few basic tips to get you jamming straight away:

  • First of all: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Enjoy the music and learn from it – there’s no judgement here
  • Start simple! Agree on a chord progression, two chords are enough at ...

Lennard's Gear

Last update on June 26, 2013.

Today I wanted to give you a look "under the hood" of jammr and show you what gear I am using to perform those mean soli you have been dying to learn. Well folks, here is my gang:

The Guitars

Lennard's Guitars

I have gone for what some might call the "budget" approach in terms of gear. I have a Fender Squire Stagemaster Rally Stripe, which I bought with my first ever earned money. I still love this guitar and play it most often. I bought it mainly because of the looks and she still looks amazing all these years later!

Second ...

Hello MIDI!

Last update on June 19, 2013.

Today we're introducing new features to help you jam together online and they are all about MIDI.

Wait, don't close this page!  We're not talking about jamming online with fake-sounding MIDI instruments.  Remember that jammr always uses real, high-quality audio so you can connect real instruments or microphones.

Instead, these MIDI features allow you to use VST plugins as an effects pedalboard, connect USB controllers and keyboards to VSTi synthesizers and samplers, or simply synchronize drum machines to the tempo of your jam automatically.  Let's go through each of these cool features in turn.

MIDI Controllers ...

Hello world!

Last update on March 25, 2013.

Hello and welcome to jammr!

Jammr is an online jamming platform bringing together musicians from all over the world and allowing them to jam - for free!

No lag and no hassle

There are far too many bedroom musicians out there, practicing at home alone. We believe that music making, by its very nature, is social and have therefore created jammr.

We want to put the social back into music making.

We are currently putting the finishing touches on jammr, in preparation for the beta launch in the first half of 2013.

Subscribe to our mailing list to be one of ...
